Lifting the Burden: Safer Linen Hamper Design for Healthcare
Challenge Overview
Healthcare facilities handle large volumes of soiled linens every day. Environmental Services (EVS) and housekeeping staff routinely remove and transport heavy linen bags from collection hampers. While some organizations have addressed hamper height to reduce bending and lifting strain, overfilling of linen bags remains a persistent challenge. This challenge invites students to redesign or rethink linen collection systems to improve worker safety and reduce the risk of musculoskeletal injuries.
The Problem
Many linen hampers are designed in a way that allows bags to be overfilled before removal. When full bags become excessively heavy, EVS staff must exert significant force to lift, pull, or maneuver them, increasing the risk of back, shoulder, and other musculoskeletal injuries. Although height modifications have helped reduce some strain, the underlying issue of overfilling has not been fully resolved.
The Opportunity
There is an opportunity to develop a linen collection solution that promotes safer handling while preventing or reducing overfilling. Innovations could help ensure bags remain within safe weight limits, improve ergonomics during removal and transport, and support frontline staff without creating additional workflow burdens for nurses, care aides, or housekeeping teams.
Design Considerations
- Worker safety: Minimize lifting, pulling, bending, and awkward postures
- Overfill prevention: Discourage or prevent bags from exceeding safe capacity
- Ease of use: Simple for all hospital staff contributing soiled linens
- Infection prevention: Compatible with healthcare cleaning and infection-control requirements
- Durability: Able to withstand frequent use in demanding healthcare environments
- Workflow compatibility: Does not increase workload or slow down operations
- Retrofit potential: Consider solutions that could work with existing infrastructure
Potential Directions (not prescriptive)
- Mechanical or physical features that limit bag capacity
- Visual indicators that signal when a hamper is approaching capacity
- Smart monitoring systems that estimate bag weight or fill level
- Ergonomic mechanisms that assist with bag removal
- Modular or compartmentalized hamper designs
- Solutions that encourage appropriate user behaviour without requiring extensive training
- Alternative approaches to collecting, transporting, or replacing linen bags
Cost Awareness & Benchmarking
- The costs associated with workplace injuries, lost time, and staff replacement
- Manufacturing, maintenance, and implementation costs of proposed solutions
- Whether the solution can be integrated into existing linen management systems
- Potential savings from reducing injury claims and improving workplace safety
- Existing commercial hamper products and their limitations
- Scalability across different hospital units and healthcare facilities
Impact
- Reduce musculoskeletal injuries among EVS and housekeeping staff
- Improve employee safety, comfort, and job satisfaction
- Decrease costs associated with workplace injuries and absenteeism
- Promote safer and more consistent linen handling practices
- Improve operational efficiency in healthcare facilities
- Create a safer working environment for support staff who play a vital role in patient care operations
