PAULI – Wearable Lung Monitoring for ARDS

Trent Suzuki, working with ICU physicians at St. Michael’s Hospital, submitted an unmet need focused on improving lung monitoring for patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) and was recognized with a $500 MDDC Recognition Award.

Clinicians caring for patients with ARDS have limited ways to continuously monitor regional changes in lung health at the bedside. Current care combines physiologic monitoring with imaging methods that provide intermittent snapshots of the lungs. PAULI explores a wearable, radiation-free approach intended to provide repeatable information about lung structure and oxygenation over time, with the goal of supporting earlier recognition of meaningful changes while reducing the need to transport critically ill patients for imaging.
