For healthcare workers in British Columbia & Ottawa and students connected to them:
Have you ever thought: “This could be safer… more effective… improve quality… reduce costs… improve efficiency… if only we had better medical devices?”
Now there is a place to share your insights!

Please fill out the form below to share relevant hazards/incidents/needs affecting patient safety or quality of care and your insights into possible solutions.
MDDC’s expert panel will review and reply within 2 weeks.

Before submitting, please take a moment to check whether similar technologies already exist in the market. This initiative is designed for unmet needs that require new development or adaptation of medical technologies, not for insights that are already addressed by existing solutions.

By submitting, you will not be giving up your ownership rights into your insights and possible solutions. Instead, MDDC seeks to empower individuals by providing recognition, funding, mentorship and connections to help your insights become practical solutions.

Preferably, you would be willing and able to spearhead your own project/solution. However, if you can’t, you may release your idea for others to work on via the form.

MDDC Awards

2023 Awards Announced! PLUS A NEW NEEDS-ORIENTATED AWARD CATEGORY

The MDDC Medical Device Development Centre of British Columbia (‘the MDDC’) is pleased to announce the renewed endowment of MDDC Student Awards to encourage and recognize student innovators in technologies relating to medicine and health care, including medical devices, systems, software, apps, and assistive technologies.

The MDDC is also announcing a special award for the “Need-Oriented Innovation in Medical Technology” for this year’s competition. The categories for the special “need-orientated” award are:

Cuffless blood pressure monitor
Alert system for personal distress
Robotic system for reducing staff injuries
Improving efficiencies of health care workers to reduce costs.

A Selection Committee consisting of MDDC Board Members evaluates the submissions from individual students and student teams based on five criteria:

Need being addressed in the project
Level of student achievement in creating the innovation
Uniqueness and originality
Stage of development of the project
Projected biomedical economic and social impacts

Honoring the student or student team who distinguish themselves as leaders in innovation through the originality of their idea, the alignment of their solution with existing needs, the attention to detail and progress in the development of the technology, and the consideration of economic and social impacts.
